Tollcross YMCA

A GLASGOW organisation which give young people the opportunity to take part in educational and social activities has received funding from the Ross and Liddell Community Bursary Scheme.

Tollcross YMCA is a recipient of the property management company’s fifth funding programme, which provides support to organisations all over Scotland.

From its recently refurbished base in Tollcross Road, the organisation promotes citizenship and develops community spirit by providing recreational and educational activities for young people in a safe environment, at no cost.

The young people involved in the organisation determine what activities they will take part in and lead the programme of learning. Following on from the success of a music project in the summer of 2014, music is at the centre of activities that take place in the centre.

The funding received from Ross and Liddell will be used to purchase equipment for the centre’s recording studio which will help the YMCA develop the learning experience it provides for young people, extend its reach further into the community.

Youth and Programme Manager Claire Dunn, said:

“Tollcross YMCA is a great resource which offers young people the chance to enjoy themselves, make new friends and learn new skills. It’s the only group in the local community that allows young people to decide what they want to learn. This encourages them to take ownership of their learning which makes them much more engaged and motivates them to keep coming along.

“Many of our members have received Youth Achievement Awards in the time that they have been here which demonstrates the positive impact the group has on young people.

“This funding will help us to grow the group and allow our members to experience even more aspects of the music industry through performing and recording their own music.

Members meet every Saturday at the YMCA centre in Tollcross on Tollcross Road, Glasgow.

YMCA was founded in 1844. Tollcross is one of thirty two associations in Scotland.

Ross and Liddell specialises in property management and maintenance, as well as providing a comprehensive range of residential and commercial services, including sales, lettings, surveying and insurance.

Now in its fifth year, the Community Bursary Scheme was launched to provide support to organisations that make a vital difference in their community.

Tollcross YMCA is one of 31 groups to receive funding in this bursary year.
